Sep. 29—SARTELL — The Willmar boys soccer team clinched the Central Lakes Conference title with a 4-0 victory over Sartell on Tuesday night.
It was the Cardinals’ first CLC championship since 2017. Willmar still has conference matches with Sauk Rapids and Rocori.
Willmar, ranked ninth in the state in Class AA, scored three first-half goals to take control against the Sabres (5-4-2).
It was a welcome change from Monday night, when the Cardinals needed to rally to win 4-3 at St. Cloud Apollo.
“We were here last night to play Apollo and snuck out with a 4-3 win,” Willmar head coach Jeff Winter said. “We played probably one of our least-strong games last night.
“And we came roaring back tonight.”
Willmar got goals from Jordy Contreras, Jairon Martinez Coto and Gabriel Rodriguez in the first half. All three are seniors.
Senior Abdullahi Mohamud scored in the second half. He also had an assist.
“We played our best passing and control game since we played Alexandria (a 2-1 win Sept. 14),” Winter said. “It was really fun watching the guys move the ball so smoothly.
“Sartell was just chasing it.”
The victory was the second of four matches scheduled this week. Winter noted the Cardinals have also had a stretch of five games in eight days earlier this season.
Willmar is host to Sauk Rapids at 5 p.m. Thursday at Hodapp Field, then plays host to Monticello at 10 a.m. Saturday.
