UEFA has suspended Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar for three games after he insulted officials on Instagram following the team’s loss to Manchester United in Champions League play.
“They put four guys that do not understand football to watch it in slow motion,” Neymar wrote. “This doesn’t exist! … There is no penalty. How can it be a handball when it hits his back! Go f*** yourselves.”
Neymar vented after Champions League collapse
The post was in response to the controversial replay that resulted in awarding Manchester United a stoppage-time penalty in the round-of-16 game on March 6.
Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford scored the series winner on the penalty shot after replay officials ruled a handball on PSG defender Presnel Kimpembe on this Diogo Dalot shot:
The winning penalty shot completed a comeback from a 2-1 deficit in the series for Manchester United that allowed them to advance to the quarterfinal round.
It completed a dramatic collapse for PSG that Neymar could only watch as he sat injured on the sideline.
Neymar scheduled to miss group stage play next season
The suspension will result in a ban for Neymar over the first half of the Champions League group stage next season.
“The CEDB has decided to suspend the Paris Saint-Germain player Neymar Junior for three (3) UEFA competition matches for which he would be otherwise eligible, for insulting match officials,” a UEFA statement reads.
